Some people use their tractors every day and others have specialized equipment they use on a seasonal basis. Whatever the case may be, you should always store your equipment properly when it’s not in use. It will save you a lot of future headaches, and your equipment will be ready when it’s time to get back to work. Here’s a quick guide to proper tractor storage. Perform all Necessary Maintenance

When you use your tractor regularly you’re much more familiar with the things that require service. That’s why it’s a good idea to deal with those service issues while they’re still fresh on your mind.

Check your engine oil and make sure it still looks thin and golden in color. If the oil is already brown and sludgy it will only get worse over time. Change your oil and filter if necessary. Drain old gas from the tank and add a small amount of fresh gas.

You should remove your battery and hook it up to a battery tender in a cool, dry place. Be sure to also inspect your tires for any wear and store them with supporting blocks or stands. Release air from your tires until they are at approximately ⅓ of the recommended air pressure.

Clean Up Your Tractor

Tractors are happiest in the dirt, but that doesn’t mean that you should put them away dirty. Don’t assume that dirt is strictly a cosmetic issue. Dirt can hide other types of damage, such as corrosion and rust. Dirt can also find its way into just about every part of your engine. Your tractor doesn’t have to be immaculate, but you should clean both the body and the tires before storage. Be sure to clean up old grease from your hydraulics and hitch points, then apply fresh grease to prevent dirt accumulation and rust buildup.

Protect Your Tractor From the Elements

A barn or shed is the best place to store your tractor. Indoor storage protects the tractor from the negative effects of weather, such as moisture buildup from the rain.

If you don’t have a barn, make sure to use a sturdy all-weather cover. Plastic covers are not recommended because they restrict normal air circulation, which can contribute to mechanical issues.

Storing your tractor properly is the best way to be prepared for the next season. It can also extend its operational life.
