Check the Road Laws

Before you begin, look up the relevant road laws in your area. Breaking them is not only unsafe, but it can also result in a big fine. Make sure you understand what your tractor is, and is not, allowed to do on the road.

Add the Signage

Tractors don't need a special license plate before going on the road. But they will need a slow-moving vehicle sign that can be easily seen by others.

For example, the sign should be placed somewhere where it won't get blocked when the tractor is towing a trailer.

Check the Lights

Proper lighting helps the operator see the road better and be better seen by other motorists. Before a tractor goes on the road, it needs two forward-facing headlights, hazard lights, a red tail light, and a continuous and visible for 500 feet light. Remember to check the lights every so often for burnt out bulbs and replace accordingly.

Monitor Traffic

Tractors tend to go much slower than other motorists on the road. This disparity is often what causes accidents.

If possible, take your tractor on the road at a time when there are fewer cars out and about.

Another approach is to take a less frequently trafficked route. It may be a bit longer of a trip, but can be more convenient if there are fewer cars around.

When you do find yourself surrounded by other motorists, stay aware of their position on the road. If needed, pull over and let cars pass. It's also helpful to utilize defensive driving strategies. Leave room between yourself and the other motorists. If they suddenly slammed on their brakes, you will have enough time to act and avoid a collision.

Use Safety Accessories

Always wear your seatbelt when driving a tractor on the road. In the event of an accident, the seatbelt can help prevent more serious injury.

You can also get extra safety accessories for your tractor. For example, rollover protection. This investment in safety can save you money in the long run in reduced medical bills.
